ALOR SETAR, Dec 1 (Bernama) -- The Kedah branch of the Malaysian Historical Society today asked the relevant authorities to return Penang to Kedah, saying that Penang had belonged to Kedah prior to the agreement with the British administrators in 1786.
Its chairman, Datuk Wan Shamsudin Mohd Yusof, said the objective of the association was for Penang to be returned to the Sultan of Kedah and that Kedah no longer seek any increase in the royalty payment which was now an annual RM10,000.
"After the independence of Malaya in 1957, Penang should have been returned to Kedah like how Dindings and Pangkor were returned to Perak.
"The Sultan of Kedah has rights over Penang, and the annual royalty payment is proof that Penang belongs to Kedah," he told a news conference here.
Wan Shamsudin said the agreement with the British in 1786 was reached due to economic and defence needs as Kedah was then threatened by Siam.
